Bronagh Waugh Talks About Jamie and 'The Fall'

Coleraine-born Bronagh Waugh, who returns to our screens soon in the second series of crime thriller The Fall, tells Jenny Lee the personal reason why she is supporting this month's Macmillan coffee morning

WHAT'S it like being Jamie Dornan's wife? That's the question Bronagh Waugh has been asked many times since hugely popular BBC Two crime thriller The Fall hit our television screens last year.In the Belfast-set series, which follows a PSNI investigation into a string of murders, Bronagh plays Sally-Ann Spector, the wife of serial killer Paul Spector (Dornan). "I get asked about Jamie all the time. He's a really nice guy and I'm really proud of him but it's just like working with any other actor," Bronagh says.

Former model Dornan is playing the lead in a much-anticipated screen adaptation of the steamy novel Fifty Shades of Grey. Will she be going to the premiere? "I'm sure we will all go and see it to support Jamie but I haven't read the books," the 31-year-old Northern Ireland actress admits. "I got to page 30 but it wasn't my cup of tea."

The Fall is rumoured to be returning to our screens early next month. So will Sally finally realise her husband is a murderer or will she be his next victim? "I'd have to kill you, Jenny, if I told you anything," Bronagh jokes. "We are totally under lock and key about it. All I can say is it's going to be fabulous."

JAMIE DORNAN

His Bafta-nominated turn in the BBC's dark drama The Fall put him on the map, but upcoming Fifty Shades Of Grey will see him dominate the world.

Jamie Dornan is tired. In the past eleven months, he's attempted to overthrow the government in 17th-century England in Channel 4's New Worlds, done a second series of suprise HBO-a-like BBC hit The Fall, as a most serial killer opposite Gillian Anderson, and filmed Fifty Shades Of Grey, the adaptation of a certain bondage bonkbuster you may have heard of.

Total break: one hasty honeymoon. Result: one broken man.

"I'm really happy, I wouldn't complain for a second," says the more-than-deserving winner of GQ's Vertu Breakthrough Artist award. "But you know, it's tiring. I feel like I'm ageing rapidly!"

Which, one would imagine, is what happens when you sign up for roles that involve revolution, serial murder and tying people up in sex dungeons. As Dornan puts it, laughing, "They're all quite demanding,"

In person, the 32-year-old is handsome, in an intense, brooding way, but in personality he's dry, laconic and does a great line flippant competitiveness.

"It was lovely to be nominated," he begins, in standard humble actor mode, of his Bafta nomination for the first season of The Fall. "But, to be honest, once you get there one the night, you want to win. I'm a competitive little bastard! Once I got there, I was really like, I want to win."

But if it was The Fall that put the former model from Northern Ireland on the map as a serious talent, it's his upcoming role as millionaire Christian Grey in Fifty Shades Of Grey - out next February - that will send him into the stratosphere. Just the small matter of an entire film half-naked with bondage whip in hand then...

"I'm not really fearful of that stuff," he says. "It's just work. It's strange work, sure, but it's still just work. I just get on with it."

His dad, he says, was his biggest cheerleader for him to get the role - one he only got after first choice Charlie Hunnam dropped out. "He was all for it. I don't come from a cagey family. We're fairly liberal."

And anyway, he says, it's not going to be the licentious sex adaptation some are expecting. "I mean, in some ways, it'll break a few boundaries. But at the same time, they want to put bums on seats. They can't alienate an audience. You know, it has to be watchable. It can't be hard-core. I wouldn't have signed up to it if it was. You've got to make something a large amount of people can go and see. It's not going to be grotesque."

Next up, he's set to secure his new-found star status by appearing opposite Bradley Cooper in Adam Jones, a film about chefs in London.

And while the past year has been exhausting, he says, there have been benefits. Namely, after a year spent tying people up in The Fall (the victims) and Fifty Shades (the submissive sex slaves), he's got rather good at knots. "Yes!". He laughs. "And specialist knots too." The Fall returns this autumn on BBC Two.

'Flying Home' Director Dominique Deruddere Answers Our Questions About Jamie

Thanks to our friend Celine at Fifty Shades of Grey Fan we got a chance to ask 'Flying Home' director Dominiqe Deruddere two questions about Jamie and here is his answers:

What was it like working with Jamie? 

Dominique Deruddere: "It was very nice working with Jamie. He's a great guy and a very good actor." 

Did Jamie take lessons for his American accent? 

Dominique Deruddere: "I don't know if he took lessons. His US accent was very good right from the start."

Does Jamie like French fries? 

Dominique Deruddere: "Jamie loves French fries with mayonnaise." 

What beer Colin drinks in the movie? Is it Leffe? 

Dominique Deruddere: "The beer Jamie drank when his character was drunk was real. It's called Trappist Beer (Belgian beer)."

"The picture was taken in August. He was walking with his wife in the street where I live. Then he entered to the bar and I asked (to take a picture). Nobody recognized him. Some people even asked me who was the person I took the picture with. Apparently he lives in the neighborhood! I hope I can see him again but it is quite impossible for me to have the same luck.

The funny fact. I was without my phone because I had just gone to the store to buy some cookies. Then I saw him and went running back to my house to get my phone. He was walking super slow so that is why I still saw him afterwards. Nobody even noticed that it was him. He even saw me running to my house and then back to him.

He was with his wife and a couple of friends."
