Jamie supports John Hodge from Bangor to build a house in Nepal for his mother

Belfast Telegraph - Ulster's hottest acting star Jamie Dornan has thrown his weight behind the appeal by Bangor man John Hodge to build his mum a home in Nepal.

An exclusive signed picture of The Fifty Shades star has been donated to John to raffle during a charity concert in August.

The Co Down-born actor, who also starred in BBC drama The Fall, is among thousands of locals who have been moved by the Bangor man's story of how he travelled to Nepal to search for his mum, who he hadn't heard from in almost 30 years.

Money has flooded in to support John in his efforts to build his long lost mum Maile (57) a stable and comfortable home after he found her living almost destitute in a remote village in April.

The 35-year-old father-of-two, who plays bass guitar with local band The Big Kahuna, travelled to Nepal with his wife Emma (34) in April to look for his mum, who he hadn't seen since she left Northern Ireland when he was just six.

John didn't know if she was alive or dead when he set out. He was overjoyed when locals in Nepal helped reunite him with her, but was devastated to find her living in a makeshift hovel with no walls and a mud floor.

On his return he launched an appeal to raise £7,000 to build her a new, more comfortable home. Within days of his story appearing in the Belfast Telegraph thousands of pounds had been donated and now, just over a month after he launched his appeal, John has almost reached his target.

The fund currently sits at £6,725 but, because of soaring building costs in the wake of the earthquake that devastated the region in April, he has been advised that he will now need to raise at least £8,500.

He said: "I had no idea that people would take the story to their hearts the way that they have and that the money would be raised so quickly.

"I am organising a fundraising concert in the King's Head for August 2 and there will be a charity raffle at it and I thought that would be the main fundraiser.

"I'm overwhelmed and so grateful to everyone who has supported me and mum. Getting a signed picture of Jamie Dornan for the raffle has been a great boost."

Founder of "Fight on for Annie" Grainne O'Neill Talks About Jamie

Wearing his wristband with pride, Holywood's Jamie Dornan did his bit to support one Northern Irish family's charity drive.

The 50 Shades of Grey star was pictured wearing a Fight on for Annie wristband alongside his dad Jim to show their support to the pancreatic cancer campaign.

Fight on for Annie was set up in memory of mum-of-three Anne O'Neill, from Armagh, who lost her battle with pancreatic cancer just months after first falling ill.

Her daughter Grainne, 22, set up Fight On For Annie to create a lasting fundraising legacy for her mum who died in January last year at the age of 54.

The fund, also supported by Anne's other daughter Sinead, son Fergal and husband Tom, raises money both Pancreatic Cancer Action and Pancreatic Cancer UK.

Jamie, who plays Christian Grey in the blockbuster film of the moment, also lost his mum to pancreatic cancer when he was just 16.

Grainne told Belfast Live: "It was unreal to get Jamie's support.

"My Twitter and Facebook accounts for Fight on for Annie have exploded since I posted the picture of him with the wristband. The picture has been seen by more than 27,000 people.

"I have 500 more Twitter followers in 24 hours and it has been shared all over the world. I have received the nicest comments from people all over the world, South Africa, America, it has been amazing."

Grainne managed to get the wristband to Jamie through friends and she said she has been blown away by his support.

"Jamie lost his mum to pancreatic cancer and that's why I wanted him to hear about us, we both have that in common, I thought there would be that relation," said Grainne, a University of Ulster student.

"He is more than helpful with any charity but the response to this has been overwhelming. The fund is my project and to get this response worldwide has been amazing. To have someone of that status with our wristband is incredible.

"It is all about raising awareness for pancreatic cancer. It has been liked more than 1,000 on our Facebook and shared almost 200 times. We have also had more than £200 in donations since I put the picture up."

Grainne started getting involved campaigning to raise awareness for the disease when her mum was first diagnosed and she took to Google to find out more.

She said: "I was horrified at the statistics. It was shocking."

Since losing her mum Grainne has raised £13,000 with help from her family and friends.

Now she hopes with Jamie Dornan's support that her campaign's message will reach more people.

Grainne said: "We are just so grateful that people are hearing the words pancreatic cancer, people do not know the harsh reality of the disease, I do not have my mum any more and Jamie does not have his mum. It is just about getting the word out there."

She added: "I just want to thank Jamie, his dad Jim for their support and all his fans for sharing the message."

Northern Irish man Jamie Dornan, fresh from starring in the movie Fifty Shades of Grey, took a picture of him wearing the purple wristband of the Fight On For Annie campaign.

Armagh woman Grainne O'Neill started the campaign after losing her mother, Annie to the disease.

About "Fight on for Annie" (you can find more info there)

Fight on for Annie was set up in memory of Anne O’Neill who lost her battle to pancreatic cancer on the 30th January 2014, aged 54. Anne was the beloved wife of Tom and mum of three children, Sinéad, Fergal and myself, Gráinne. 

Mummy was diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer in June 2013 and was given between 4 and 6 months to live. Mummy fought the disease for seven months, she was determined to beat pancreatic cancer and reminded positive throughout her battle. 

Unfortunately the cancer was too aggressive as it was stage IV which meant that it had spread from her pancreas to her liver, lungs and back. 

I have set up this fund to honour and commemorate my mummy’s life, she was not only a mum but my best friend. 

My mummy was such a caring and giving person, always putting her children and others' needs in front of her own. I am forever thankful and blessed to call her my mummy, she is and always will be my inspiration and I want to continue to raise money and campaign in her memory. 

I want to help prevent other families from having to experience this horrible disease and heartbreaking statistics. I want the survival rates to give people hope, not to fill them with fear and remove all hope for their loved ones who have pancreatic cancer. This is why I have founded ‘Fight on for Annie’.

"Hearbeat-NI is a parent-led Northern Ireland voluntary charity. We support Clark Clinic at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children, the paediatric cardiac unit for the province. We also support the provision of an MRI Scanner for the Children's Hospital and will contribute financially towards this.

Our aims are to provide emotional and practical support to families who have children with heart conditions, and to raise awareness of congenital and acquired heart disease in children. Over 200 babies are born with a heart problem each year in Northern Ireland and one third of these children are sufficiently ill to require investigation and/ or surgery.
