Finally, in a daze, the Oscars the next day. He remembers that after the second Oscar, seemingly every single award received a stand-ing ovation, and so, as his wife Hannah was all but sewn into her dress and immobile, he had to hoist her up, Weekend At Bernie's-style, each time. The speech itself was a blur ("I had such a spike of adrenaline I can't remember anything"), and then straight off stage to a press conference, where an Australian journalist asked if it was true that Karl and Susan Kennedy from Neighbours were his acting inspirations (they were). Then, Madonna's party with every celeb-rity on the planet ("There's Beyonce, and Beyonce's music is playing, and she's with Jay Z"), but he mostly huddled with his good friends Jamie Dornan, Benedict Cumberbatch and various other Brits.

Finally, at around 4am, an Eddie Redmayne Oscars delegation, which included Dornan and his wife Amelia Warner, gathered at his hotel bar in the Sunset Tower, overlooking Sunset Boulevard, and so at last he could relax, could settle and, for him, be curiously calm ("It was the first time I could actually, you know..."). He watched the Los Angeles sun gently rise.

Eddie Redmayne Talks About Jamie and 'Fifty Shades of Grey'

Long before his Oscar glory, Eddie Redmayne was roommates with another actor whose career was then on the rise – Jamie Dornan.

"We used to come to LA and we'd go and we'd sort of rent somewhere or stay on friends' floors and go to auditions and fail to get parts," Eddie told Access Hollywood's Billy Bush on the Oscars red carpet on Sunday night.

Eddie – who won the Oscar for Best Actor – said the "Fifty Shades of Grey" star is one of his "best mates," but he admitted he hasn't had the opportunity to see his pal's blockbuster film.

"I haven't seen the film yet because I've been shooting a film in London, but of course we've spoken about it," he explained. "I think it was quite an extraordinary experience for him."

Newlywed Eddie – who married Hannah Bagshawe in December – told Billy he's unsure if his wife will see "Fifty Shades."

"I'd have to ask her," he said. "I think it's a bit weird when it's your friend."

I’m not looking for dating advice. Is that something actors do, say nice things about people they may have worked with once or twice?

When you’ve been in the acting world long enough you work with people again and again. Jamie, Rob, Andrew Garfield and I have been working for about 12 years, starting in theatre in London. I was at school and university with Tom Hiddleston. When we go to Los Angeles we would stay on friends’ floors and as a group of Brits we would stick together and help each other with auditions. People become family. So they are actually friends, I promise we’re not just pumping hot air up each others’…

Are they on your Christmas card list?

I was just talking to Hannah, my girlfriend [yes, he used the word girlfriend four days before marrying her], about Christmas cards. I feel like the second you start a Christmas card list then you can never stop and you’re perpetually causing offence to people – if you forget to send one and you did the year before. Although as a kid I used to love making Christmas cards, with a bit of Pritt Stick and glitter. It was probably my favourite time of the year.

Because when you come to this city, it's such an alien city. Particulary compared to London, where you can walk everywhere, you can stumble across things. So we tended to stick together as a wee clan and it's where some of my greatest friendship have come from. Having friends who have also been through it have the ups and downs. It's good to share.

EDDIE REDMAYNE is amazed he and his actor pal JAMIE DORNAN have embarked on successful film careers because they frequently wasted afternoons playing games while waiting for auditions in Los Angeles.

The Theory of Everything star has been surrounded by awards buzz since his portrayal of physicist Stephen Hawking was released in the U.S. last month (Nov14).

The star is amazed he landed such a big role as he can recall wasting afternoons in Los Angeles six years ago with Irish actor Dornan, who has landed the coveted part of Christian Grey in upcoming erotic thriller Fifty Shades of Grey.

Redmayne tells Stylist magazine, "I remember being in L.A. with Jamie, staying on friends' floors and going to auditions but having nothing to do in-between. We ended up driving to this hotel where you get free parking if you buy something to eat, so we'd share a club sandwich and have ruthless, relentless games of ping-pong for an entire afternoon. Frankly, it was astounding any of us managed to achieve anything."

Variety - Redmayne recalls visiting Hollywood in his early 20s for auditions with other unknowns like Andrew Garfield, Tom Sturridge and Jamie Dornan. “You’d come over for a month,” Redmayne says. “We used to go to the Standard Hotel in West Hollywood, and split a sandwich between us because that meant we could get cheaper parking. We’d swim and play table tennis for hours.” It was, in many ways, a surreal existence trying to break into the business. “We were staying on friend’s agents’ floors, and renting places together,” Redmayne says. “I’d be driving the cheapest rental car. But then you’d get to turn up at the CAA party. All these huge limos would arrive. I’d be in this red blob.”

Redmayne says there was a comfort in his expat community, because even if he didn’t land roles, he’d be happy when one of his friends did. “When we started going out for the same parts, it never got in the way of our friendships,” says Cox, his co-star in “Theory,” who screen tested for “My Week With Marilyn.” Redmayne tells a story about how at the press junket for “Les Miserables,” a journalist asked him if he’d ever audition to play Christian Grey in “Fifty Shades of Grey.” After he said yes, the book’s author, E.L. James, dissed his candidacy. “She took to her Twitter feed to go, ‘Under no circumstances!’ ” Redmayne recalls. “I was like, all right, all right! Am I that bad? I can put a whip in my hand. I can get all kinky, can’t I?” He scrunches his face in a way that suggests more of an academic than an S&M expert. “Apparently not,” he concedes.
