From Variety
Oliver Platt, Molly Parker, Barbara Hershey and Aiden Longworth have joined indie supernatural thriller “The 9th Life of Louis Drax” opposite Jamie Dornan, Aaron Paul and Sarah Gadon.
Alexandre Aja began shooting Monday for Miramax, AntColony Films and Brightlight Pictures. Sierra/Affinity is selling international rights at the American Film Market.
Longworth is portraying the title character. Platt will play Louis Drax’s psychologist, Parker will appear as a detective and Hershey will play Louis’ grandmother.
Aja is directing from Max Minghella’s screenplay, based on Liz Jensen’s novel of the same title. Producers are Tim Bricknell and Minghella of AntColony Films, Shawn Williamson of Brightlight Pictures and Aja. Rosanne Korenberg is executive producer.
Minghella’s father Anthony Minghella had been developing a “Louis Drax” movie prior to his death in 2008. He had picked up rights in 2004 with an eye to direct from his own adaptation.
The story is focused on the titular character who suffers a near-fatal fall on his 9th birthday. Dornan will portray a doctor caring for the boy who is drawn into a mystery, testing the boundaries of fantasy and reality.
Miramax has been ramping up production of late. In December, it signed a 20-year deal with Harvey and Bob Weinstein for co-production and co-distribution of movies, TV and stage for titles in the Miramax library.
