Bronagh Waugh Talks About Jamie and 'The Fall' with Cosmopolitan

When you started working with Jamie, he was not cast as Christian Grey, right?

That's right. No, he wasn't. It's a big change, I guess, for everybody — for him, especially. It's very weird. I never thought when I did this show that I would be asked more about Jamie than about Gillian. Like, I find that really interesting. 'Cause I think — I'm a bit of a feminist, as well, so I'm, like, I think Gillian is fucking incredible.

I'm a feminist too! I spoke to Gillian yesterday. But most of your scenes are with Jamie, not with Gillian. I actually thought about this and justified the line of question.

[Laughs.]

I did! Even though you don't have anything to do with Fifty Shades directly, you're now attached to in some way. That's a unique experience.

Yeah, it's so weird, isn't it? Because this thing has happened in the middle of us doing our little independent show that is from the grassroots up, and I think everyone liked that because there was no pressure and we were all putting our heads down and producing some really fucking good work. And then Jamie goes and gets cast as Christian Grey! And it's like, Oh my God, the world has turned upside down. And I feel like I can't answer anything because I'm not him. I'm always kind of flummoxed when people ask me about him, because I feel like Jamie must be so fucking sick of hearing me talk about him. He has no control over that. He has enough pressure on his shoulders with his huge job that I feel bad for him. He's such a fucking awesome guy. And I love it when I see people I know do well and get good work. As opposed to someone where you're like, Ugh, he's such a dick. Why did they have to pick him? But Jamie's not. He's a really good guy. And he's a great actor. I think he fucking excels in the second season [of The Fall]. His confidence really shows. It's grown.

Do you think there will be a season three?

There's been rumor and talk, but until those get confirmed, we don't know anything. But I think there's room for it. There's room for one more. At the same time, the ending of the second, you could walk away from that never knowing.

Never knowing if he lives or dies?

Yeah.

Well, that's another way that Fifty Shades is the elephant in the room, because can Jamie even do another season?

Yeah. Well, Allan's such an amazing storyteller, I think he would tell it in a way that it's not necessarily about whether Paul dies or he lives. There's more to the story than that.

(...) We really bonded as a family.

How so?

Jamie and I took the kids out to the zoo because we needed to get some photographs — family photos to use around the house — and we did that before we started the show, and I think it really helped. The two of us had a really nice relationship.

You have some intimate scenes together. One where you get into a bath completely naked and he washes you, another is a sex scene. What were the mechanics of these?

[For the tub scene] I did full nudity, but it got cut down a lot in the edit, I guess for compliance and for artistic reasons. Allan is a real advocate of not having gratuitous nudity or violence. We actually commented before we started shooting on how [on] so many shows it's like, Did we really need to see that? And why is it always the woman who is more naked than the man? Allan was like, "I do not want this to be like that." And when we do [show nudity], he said, "I want to see Sally Ann just sometimes walking across a shot in her panties and her bra, picking up the kids' dirty laundry or whatever." Letting it all hang out. Being natural the way you would be in the house. This is not in any way something sexy.

And then, obviously, I knew we had this big sex scene in the barn. We shot a lot more and the scene was a lot longer than what is actually shown. We saw Sally Ann in a much stronger light in that scene, you see her straddling Paul and being on top and being dominant in the sex, and I think that was really interesting to have explored that more, because she obviously didn't know anything about what he was into. So as an audience member, you watch that feeling very uncomfortable, going like, "Oh, God. She has no idea!" And there's actually one bit where I put my hand around his throat. I kind of wish that had still been in, because I think that was very provocative. Not provocative, but it was kind of controversial.

So this all got cut? Because in the scene I saw, he was on top, that was it.

Yeah, the stuff that got cut. So, in the lead up to doing that, I was really shitting myself. I was on a television show [Hollyoaks] for five years before that where I had to be in my bra and panties quite a lot of the time, but it was on a show that was on at 6:30 in the evening, so it was nothing like what this was. I didn't have to actually fully get my boobs or lady garden out. So, we had a tiny little plaster on my lady garden, which really didn't need to be there, 'cause it was so pointless. And nothing on the boobs. You could have pasties if you wanted them, but I'm from the Lena Dunham school of "Who gives a fuck?" But of course when it comes to the day, it's fucking terrifying.
I think it's the least sexy thing to do, to mechanically simulate sex with another person who is your colleague. Everyone's like, "Oh my God, that's so exciting that you got to." And it's like, "No! No! Where do you work? Okay, you work in Walmart. Would you ever ask the guy who sits next to you in Walmart to pretend to have sex with you?" That is the most awkward thing in the world.

Right. Lucky is you get to have real sex with Jamie Dornan, assuming he weren't married, of course.

Yes! Exactly!

How was Jamie at making you feel comfortable?

I mean, he was nervous, too. It's awkward for both of us. But we're colleagues and we get along really good, so we just wanted to make it easy and get it done with as quickly as possible. It was fine and grand and we kind of high-fived at the end and went, "Whew! Okay. Job well done. Let's go play some football with the rest of the crew."

Was the mood of the set light then? Were you guys able to have fun even though it's a heavy show?

Yeah. I think that's a very Irish thing. Even amongst tragedy and horrific things, the Irish sense of self is to have humor through everything. And that that was a great way of getting through such a tough shoot.

Bronagh Waugh Talks About Jamie

Millions have been glued to BBC’s chiller drama The Fall and watching on the edge of their seats since it returned for a second series three weeks ago.

With actor Jamie Dornan in the role of twisted sex killer Paul and Gillian Anderson as Stella, the policewoman trying to hunt him down, it’s been a creepy ratings winner for BBC2.

Former Hollyoaks actress Bronagh Waugh went back to her native Northern Ireland for filming of the series as Paul’s (now estranged) missus Sally Ann.

The 32-year-old, once a regular on Lark Lane, is now married – on screen at least – to the nation’s scariest man.

So what’s it like cosying up week after week with a serial killer?

“It is a pleasure to work with such a charming and talented actor as Jamie,” Bronagh tells Insider, “although it is hard for me to separate being both a viewer and actor in not being able to unsee the horrific things that my character’s husband has done in the first season so that I can pick up where we left off with Sally-Ann being completely unaware of her husband’s dark secret.”

Alongside his sinister role as Paul, Jamie is about to have another massive profile part in the New Year.

He’s been cast as Christian Grey in the big screen version of the saucy bestselling novel Fifty Shades of Grey, so maybe that puts Bronagh in an enviable position after all ...

“I haven’t read the books (50 Shades),” she laughs, “but of course I’ll watch the film and support Jamie.

"All of us in The Fall team are so proud of him.”

Bronagh Waugh Talks About Jamie

“Jamie Dornan’s sweat doesn’t smell!”

HEAT MAGAZINE: She’s gone from soapstress to big-time star in less than 12 months. JEN CROTHERS finds out how…

So, the world’s sexiest man, Jamie Dornan, just happens to be your snog partner on The Fall. Were you nervous working with him?

No because we’ve been on this journey together for two years now, so it’s just weird. He’d be mortified if anyone thought that. It’s just Jamie! We screen-tested together, we got on really well, and it just seemed to work. It was really weird when we did the first series, because no one really knew who Jamie was.

Really?

Yeah. When we were filming, I got tortured all the time for pictures because of Hollyoaks, but no one knew who Jamie was then. We took our kids [from the show] to Belfast Zoo on a bonding day and I got stopped everywhere. He was like, “This is so weird.” He’s such a shy person and he’s very self-deprecating. I was like “Yeah, if the show’s a success, you’ll have to get used to it.” Fast-forward a year, and he’s one of the most famous men on the planet. Filming the second season, he’d stop traffic!

Do you find him sexy, though?

When you work in the industry, nothing is very sexy. You are working with someone and it’s work. So I wasn’t fazed at all, because he’s just my colleague.

What’s the least sexy thing about Jamie?

Probably him playing football with the crew lads and getting really sweaty. On my last day, I went to hug him goodbye and he was soaking and he went, “C’mere!” He gave me a big hug and I was like, “Urgh, your face is just wet with sweat.” But other people would probably find that really sexy. I didn’t. [Laughs.]

Did it smell?

No. It just felt as if someone had licked your face.

How does everyone on The Fall feel about Jamie doing Fifty Shades of Grey?

Everyone on the team is so excited and really pleased for him, and I’ll definitely watch it. I think it will be strange, but I think if anyone’s going to do it, he’ll do it really well.

Do other celebrities take you more seriously now, though?

It’s more the people I fangirl over saying that they enjoy the show. Like Lena Dunham.

Actual Lena Dunham?

I remember waking up at 7am one morning, and Jamie [Dornan] had texted me and he was like, “Get the f*** out of bed. I know you’re in bed – wake the f*** up! Check your Twitter now!” I got up and checked my Twitter and I had thousands of new followers – Lena Dunham had tweeted me.

Sally Ann wears lots of dowdy jumpers – what’s the worst thing you’ve had to wear on the show?

Nothing! In the first season, I had to be totally naked apart from football socks and some wellies, and that was really, really mortifying, being naked in a barn in front of a horse that kept peeing continually. I hadn’t been to the gym in over two years because I had a really bad back injury, and Jamie had a really bad shoulder injury, so we were like two geriatrics. There was nothing sexy about it! [Laughs.]

Bronagh Waugh Talks About 'The Fall' Season 2 and Jamie

Bronagh Waugh: "...the whole The Fall team are just so proud of him, we couldn't be more prouder. Everyone says he's sexy but he's a nice guy and a good actor, too. You know he's just a fab guy so we are very delighted for him and we are delighted to have him back [on the Fall]."

"...Jamie is really good with a beard. When I saw his promo pictures from Fifty Shades of Grey, I was like 'Ughh what happened to my husband? Where he's gone?' He doesn't look Irish anymore."

Bronagh Waugh Mentions Jamie

Bronagh will appear on screens next month in The Fall as the wife of serial killer Paul Spector, played by Jamie Dornan, 32.

“We attracted hundreds of people when we were filming outside scenes,” laughed Bronagh.

“And the hysteria around Jamie was just insane.

“My character makes minimal effort and being next to a man deemed one of the sexiest on the planet with no make-up on is not great.”

Coleraine-born Bronagh Waugh, who returns to our screens soon in the second series of crime thriller The Fall, tells Jenny Lee the personal reason why she is supporting this month's Macmillan coffee morning

WHAT'S it like being Jamie Dornan's wife? That's the question Bronagh Waugh has been asked many times since hugely popular BBC Two crime thriller The Fall hit our television screens last year.In the Belfast-set series, which follows a PSNI investigation into a string of murders, Bronagh plays Sally-Ann Spector, the wife of serial killer Paul Spector (Dornan). "I get asked about Jamie all the time. He's a really nice guy and I'm really proud of him but it's just like working with any other actor," Bronagh says.

Former model Dornan is playing the lead in a much-anticipated screen adaptation of the steamy novel Fifty Shades of Grey. Will she be going to the premiere? "I'm sure we will all go and see it to support Jamie but I haven't read the books," the 31-year-old Northern Ireland actress admits. "I got to page 30 but it wasn't my cup of tea."

The Fall is rumoured to be returning to our screens early next month. So will Sally finally realise her husband is a murderer or will she be his next victim? "I'd have to kill you, Jenny, if I told you anything," Bronagh jokes. "We are totally under lock and key about it. All I can say is it's going to be fabulous."

Bronagh Waugh Talks About Jamie

On the subject of scenes on The Fall, it’s only natural to ask what everyone else wants to know… what it’s like to play the wife of serial killer Paul Spector, or more importantly, act out love scenes with former Mr Calvin Klein and the immortalised Christian Grey otherwise known as Jamie Dornan.

“I get asked that all the time,” she begins on the subject. “He’s just Jamie. When you’re an actor and you work on the set all the time, it’s just a work thing. The interest is weird,” she continued.

“Our intimate scenes are the least intimate moments ever. For a start there are 40 people in the room. I remember we did this one scene, in the bath and the water had to be still, no bubbles. I got in and lay down and I see Jamie’s shoulders going like this (shakes) and I look down and there’s my modesty cover floating down the bath so when things like that happen, it’s the most unromantic, unsexy thing ever,” recalled Bronagh.

Jamie Dornan’s rise to fame as an actor could very easily dominate a conversation with Bronagh and she’d happily chat for hours about his skillset, his professionalism and what a great guy he is without resentment; “I went for an audition once and I think I was only called in because I worked with Jamie. It’s just a really weird thing and I’m like ‘yes, but did you see the show? Did you like the show?’”

(...)

Funny is one adjective that is very apt for Bronagh. Humour is all part of her makeup. She’s one very funny lady and her self-deprecating tales could while away hours in her company.

One example is her recital of the IN! Magazine Awards in March when she took the title of Woman of the Year – an experience she reflects on with pride but a touch of embarrassment.
